Rollercoaster Challenge
Build a working rollercoaster together, section by section.
What happens on the day
Teams are challenged to create a progressive, functional rollercoaster in a fixed amount of time. Each team is responsible for its own section of track, but the sections have to line up and join together – so the ball only makes it to the end if every team has planned, built and coordinated with the teams on either side.
Delegates use co-ordination, planning and communication to visualise the structure, build their section taking the physics into account, join the sections together and then test the run. It is a collaborative activity where every team must focus on its own piece while taking responsibility for the completion of the entire structure.
All equipment and materials are supplied. The satisfaction of collaborating and seeing the rollercoaster working and running at the end draws the group together and shows them that nothing is impossible. Completion certificates are handed out to the whole team.
“You guys did an absolutely outstanding job yesterday and we could not be happier with the result. I do not know how you guys manage to rein in and control so many people. It was really fantastic working with you.”
– Clare van Rensburg, Private Property
Highlights
Rollercoaster Challenge is an indoor construction team build where the whole group works together to design and build one working rollercoaster from the materials supplied.
Split into teams, each group builds a section of the ride – then the sections are joined, tested and run as one. It is a hands-on exercise in planning, coordination and communication that works just as well in a conference room as it does in a hall.

Recommended duration is 2 to 3 hours depending on the size of the group. Timing is customised to suit your programme.
Can it be done indoors?
Yes – Rollercoaster Challenge is designed as an indoor activity and works well in a conference room, boardroom or hall. It can also be run under cover outdoors.
How many people can take part?
The activity scales from small teams to very large groups – the bigger the group, the longer the rollercoaster. Everyone builds, so nobody sits on the sidelines.
