When tasked with organizing a team-building event for Sanlam at the Sandton Convention Centre, we knew we needed to create something extraordinary.

The objective was to unite 700 delegates under the conference’s catchphrase, “United in Purpose,” and we decided there was no better way to do this than by creating a massive collaborative artwork.

The Challenge

Our creative vision for the day was ambitious—a giant 9 by 5-meter masterpiece, designed from a custom template. Typically, a project of this magnitude would take a single painter over 2,000 hours to complete.

However, our delegates, armed with purpose and a shared vision, accomplished this remarkable feat in just 2 hours.

Why Art as a Team-Building Tool?

Art is often underestimated as a team-building activity, yet it offers unique advantages:

  1. Encourages Collaboration: Each delegate worked on a segment of the template, knowing that their individual effort contributed to a larger, united vision. This fosters a sense of collective ownership and pride.

  2. Celebrates Diversity: With 700 people, no two segments looked exactly alike. The artwork became a vibrant tapestry, showcasing the diverse perspectives and strengths within the team.

  3. Enhances Communication: Creating art together requires communication and coordination. Participants had to discuss colors, patterns, and techniques, mirroring the collaboration needed in the workplace.

  4. Boosts Morale and Engagement: Completing such a grand project in a short time frame left everyone feeling accomplished and motivated, proving that, united in purpose, we can achieve anything.

  5. Creates a Lasting Symbol: The final piece isn’t just a beautiful artwork; it’s a visual reminder of what the team can achieve when they work together. It stands as a testament to their collective strength and unity.

Lessons in Unity and Purpose

This team art challenge at the Sandton Convention Centre was more than just an activity; it was a demonstration of the power of teamwork. Completing a 2,000-hour project in just 2 hours underscores how working together can break barriers and achieve the seemingly impossible.

In the corporate world, “United in Purpose” is more than a catchphrase—it’s a catalyst for success. When each team member brings their unique skills and perspectives to the table, the possibilities are limitless. This event highlighted that, much like the artwork created that day, the strength of a team lies in its unity and shared purpose.
