There’s a big difference between a team that does the job and a team that goes the extra mile.

Most employees know what is expected of them. They arrive, complete their tasks, attend the meetings and meet the basic requirements of their roles.

But high-performing teams do something more.

They help each other without being asked. They solve problems before they become bigger problems. They contribute ideas. They take ownership. They care about the outcome — not simply their own piece of the job.

So what makes people want to give that little bit extra?

It’s rarely about telling them to work harder.

It’s about creating an environment where people want to contribute more.

1. Give People a Reason to Care

People perform differently when they understand why their work matters.

If employees simply receive a list of tasks, they may complete them. But when they understand how their contribution affects the team, the customer and the organisation, those tasks start to have meaning.

Leaders need to connect everyday work to a bigger purpose.

Don’t only tell people what needs to be done.

Help them understand why it matters.

2. Recognise Effort — Not Just Results

Recognition is one of the simplest ways to encourage people to keep giving their best.

Yet it is surprisingly easy for great work to become expected.

A team member stays late to help a colleague. Someone solves a customer problem. Another employee takes responsibility for something outside their normal role.

If those moments continually go unnoticed, people eventually start asking:

“Why am I making the extra effort?”

Recognition doesn’t need to involve bonuses, awards or elaborate incentive programmes.

Sometimes a genuine “I saw what you did — thank you” can have a powerful impact.

3. Give People Ownership

Micromanaged employees rarely go the extra mile.

Why would they?

If every decision has already been made and every action needs approval, people quickly learn to simply follow instructions.

Instead, give people responsibility.

Ask for their ideas. Allow them to make decisions. Give them opportunities to solve problems.

When people feel trusted, they become more invested in the result.

Move your team from:

“Tell me what you want me to do.”

to:

“Leave it with me.”

That shift can transform performance.

4. Build Stronger Connections

People are far more likely to make an extra effort for people they care about.

That is why relationships inside teams matter.

When colleagues know each other, trust each other and enjoy working together, something important changes.

People start helping one another.

Instead of thinking:

“That’s not my job.”

they start thinking:

“How can I help?”

Strong relationships create cooperation, and cooperation creates stronger performance.

This is one of the reasons shared experiences and effective team building can have such a powerful impact. When people connect beyond their everyday roles, they often return to work with stronger relationships and a greater willingness to support one another.

5. Create Shared Wins

Nothing builds momentum like success.

But teams need to experience that success together.

Celebrate the big contract.

Celebrate the difficult project that finally gets completed.

Celebrate the employee who solved the impossible problem.

And celebrate the small victories along the way.

Shared wins reinforce the feeling that:

“We achieved this together.”

That sense of collective achievement encourages people to keep pushing forward.

Engagement Comes Before Extra Effort

You can demand attendance.

You can set targets.

You can measure KPIs.

You can create job descriptions.

But you cannot write “go the extra mile” into someone’s employment contract and expect it to happen.

That extra effort is voluntary.

It happens when people feel valued, trusted, connected and part of something worth contributing to.

And that means one of the most important questions leaders should be asking isn’t:

“How do I get more out of my people?”

It is:

“How do I create a team that wants to give more?”

Would Your Team Go the Extra Mile?

Think about your team today.

Would they step in to help a colleague who was struggling?

Would they take responsibility for a problem that technically wasn’t theirs?

Would they contribute an idea even if nobody asked?

Would they make an extra effort when nobody was watching?

If the answer isn’t an immediate YES, it might be time to focus less on pushing performance — and more on building the engagement, trust and connection that drives it.

Because great teams don’t just do the job.

They care enough to do more.
