Sandton, Johannesburg’s commercial hub, has many top 4 and 5 star venue options and Corporate Amazing Races are often run through this area. Making use of the Gautrain to move around the area is an awesome way to spice up any event.

Team Building Ideas

With the variety of areas and activities on offer, Johannesburg is the ideal setting for Amazing Races. The route and specific activities can be customised according to the client’s needs and a wide variety of activities can be offered. A good example of this would be for example a client whose offices are in Sandton. They could start their race in Sandton, complete a few activities in that area, then board the Gautrain and head to Soweto where they can complete the second part of the race in the township. It’s always a great idea to consider a walking Amazing Race team build, as this is safer and does away with the stress of organising vehicles. Maboneng Precinct is ideal for these walking races.

How about a Masterchef Braai Challenge? Joburgers spend their weekends braaing. So why not incorporate this traditional activity into a Masterchef Challenge with a twist. Teams must prepare the ultimate Barbecue meal using the wide range of ingredients provided. In addition, teams create a marketing board for their meal and must take part in a taste test challenge to earn points. Cooking events are great because they involve a caring and bonding experience around preparing a meal together. In addition, buy-in is guaranteed because the group will be eating the results of their hard work. A competitive challenge that is also ultimately collaborative – the ultimate Team Building exercise!

With the Vaal River as well as the Hartbeespoort Dam in close proximity to the city, water-based activities can also be considered. From White water rafting to raft building and booze cruises, there are many options. How about a CSI Challenge on a riverboat?

Another cool idea might be a charity-based event. In partnership with bike charity Qubeka, Beach and Bush have put together an awesome Bike Building Challenge that is both challenging and exciting. Bikes are donated to the needy after the event.

Johannesburgers are not afraid of hard work! Perhaps challenge and extend your group with a product like the Newsroom Challenge. This exciting activity enables groups to plan ahead and strategize around an idea or concept. The date for the newspaper the groups are creating is dated 1 year ahead. Team members are challenged to come up with headline and articles explaining how they achieved their targets or goals.

Things to Bare in Mind

Traffic can be a nightmare around Johannesburg at certain times of the day and gridlock is a fact of life for Joburgers. Always factor in plenty of time to travel to and from your venue.

Book early, popular venues in Johannesburg can be booked out months in advance, particularly at the end of the year and on Fridays.

The Weather in Johannesburg is superb year-round. However mid-winter mornings and evenings can be chilly so choose any activities accordingly. Mid-summer can be really hot, so take care to move indoors during mid-day. Beach and Bush offer a wide range of indoor challenges.

Safety must always be taken into account on any event. Johannesburg, like most large cities in the world, has its share of crime. Common sense should be followed when making choices about planning a team build.
